Our Church
St Nicholas is a Christian community in the centre of Prestwick. We are part of the Church of Scotland. The basis of our faith is the Word of God as contained in the Bible.
We believe in one God - the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. We believe that God is present in the world and is seeking to enrich our lives through knowing Jesus Christ, his Son.
Our aim is to follow the teaching and example of Jesus Christ through whose life, death and resurrection we come to know, love and worship God. We seek to do this through love and practical care for each other and those we encounter in our daily lives.
We observe to sacraments of Baptism and Holy Communion. We baptise adults who believe and the children of Christian families.
St Nicholas church is over 100 years old and is located at the southern end of Prestwick. Works started in 1907 with the memorial stone being laid on the 7th March 1908. Work continued apace with the completion of the Church, Church Hall, Vestry, Session Room, Choir Room and facilities in time for the Dedication Service on 20th November 1908. With its Ballochmyle red sandstone spire rising to over 35m St Nicholas Parish Church is a prominent landmark for miles around and continues to play an important place in the local community.
Like many other churches and communities in the country, the congregation of St Nicholas suffered losses of those serving in the armed forces during the First and Second World Wars. Our Memorial Window to the chancel is dedicated to those who died in WW1 and is titled “The Ascension of our Lord” and quotes ‘While He blessed them, He was parted from them and carried up to Heaven” — St. Luke 24 V.51.
Two windows to the western end of the south wall of the naive, are dedicated to those who died during the WW2 and depict two moments in the life of Jesus. The first is the crucifixion including the words “Greater Love Hath No Man Than This”. The second window includes a scene from the Last Supper with the words “This do in remembrance of me”.
This sense of service and sacrifice are two recurring themes in the life and work of the congregation of St Nicholas. Despite the challenging times faced by many churches, St Nicholas Parish church retains a strong connection with its parish and the people of Prestwick through the selfless dedication of many of our members, as we seek to live out the love of Jesus Christ in our congregation and our community.
